Look, I like alliterations and there's no days starting with R, alas.

One of the reasons I'm somewhat behind on writing is that I've been reading a lot lately, on top of all the stuff I've been watching. Most of it was really good though, so I definitely don't have any regrets.

Thanks to [personal profile] isis , I started Course Of Honour a couple of weeks ago. Arranged Marriage in Space?? With slow-burn pining and lots of politics?Count me in. It finished last week, and I'm honestly sad it's over. I enjoyed it so much, both Kiem and Jainan were such great characters, with varying strengths and weakness, and I loved the world and all the politics. The slow-burn was delicious, and while I wished the author would have spent a little more time on the emotional resolution, I'm still absolutely in love with these two. And kind of hoping there'll be fanfic and/or missing scenes.

While I didn't participate in [community profile] fandom5k I did read and commented on quite a bit of fic. Overall I thought the exchange was really good quality wise. I'm definitely thinking about participating next year, if they lower the offering fandoms a little. I wrote an embarrassingly long comment (nearly hit the character limit) for i have named you queen (listen) by [personal profile] damkianna. It's a truly amazing F/F Original Work story, about a princess who gets herself out of a dire situation by proposing to another princess. It's filled with cultural conflicts and misunderstandings, is set in a super interesting desert world, with great political intrigue, and the main character has such an amazing voice, and such a layered personality. One of the best things I read so far this year. I even got out of bed after finishing it because I just had so much emotions about it, I couldn't share them by typing on my phone. It was so good.

I also really enjoyed Thorough-bass and human nature by [archiveofourown.org profile] MildredMost, which is a Pride and Prejudice story about Mary Bennet finding love and piano lessons. I never cared much for Mary, but this fic really brought home to me how much we only see her trough Lizzy's eyes, and how Mary really got the short end in her upbringing. I honestly got emotional when she got actual piano lessons and improved so marvellously, her crowning moment of awesome was so great and rewarding. I also really loved her love-interest, and truly, this is the kind of future I wish for her.

Next week the second book in the Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews comes out, so I've started my reread of Burn For Me. I'm really enjoying it, the Andrews' writing and characterisation is as ever top-notch, but I'd forgotten how much of a psychopath Mad Rogan is. Which I enjoy for plot reasons, but I'm kind of wary of him turning into a romantic lead. Basically, the Andrews' sold me on the fact that's mad so well, I'm not sure he can recover from that?
I always loved Kate and Curran's relationship from the Kate Daniels series, because they're so evenly matched, both somewhat homicidal maniacs who reach for violence as a response way too soon. They match well together because of that. Rogan and Nevada seem too fundamentally different at this point to really work as a couple, the power-imbalance seems to vast to me.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very willing to go wherever the Andrews' take me, and I have a lot of faith in their ability to truly have characters develop and grow. I'm just not sure they're getting the book space to really make it work.
In any case, I'm looking forward to the next instalment immensely.

Summary:

Alec would have thought that asking for things would get easier in time, and it has—it’s so much easier now—but it’s still not easy. “Could you keep my hands there?” Alec presses his hands deeper into the mattress to point out what he means. “With your magic, I mean.”

Magnus arches his brow. “I didn’t know you were into bondage.”

Technically Alec doesn't know that yet either, but he's very willing to find out. “I’m into you,” he says. “And your magic.”

I've been planning to do a weekly WIP post for a while now, to keep myself motivated and to keep track of what I'm working on. I'm not the best at longer projects, mostly because I easily get distracted by new shiny fic ideas, and thus lose momentum with older ideas if I don't finish them right away.

One of the reasons I do so many exchanges is because the deadline makes me finish things while I'm working on it, but that doesn't fix the issue for fics I start on my own of course (my Scrivener project for Shadowhunters is like 80% unfinished fics, it's a tragedy).

Which is why I'm so happy with [community profile] wipbigbang, as it allows me to finish the Space AU I started and would otherwise never have finished. It's a Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair fusion, in which Alec is a famous cyborg, and Magnus a warlock mercenary turned captain who've been on opposite sides of a war for a couple of years, but are now forced to work together. I already posted their first meeting as a prologue set about 7 years before the storyline I'm working on.

Alec/Magnus Space AU Snippet )

Thing is, one of my goals of this year is to publish a story every month, and since both [community profile] jukebox_fest  and [community profile] soulexchange posting dates are early june, I needed an extra story to post in May. Which means I've started a Alec/Magnus magical bonding PWP, but that also means that I now have to urgently finish three fics.

My best friends marries next week, so now I'm having all of the race to the deadline stress. Sometimes that's part of the fun, but we'll see how I feel about that next week!

I don't have a television, so the last couple of years my TV watching has limited itself to a couple of tv shows, about 3 per year, that I follow more or less while they air. They never overlap while airing, so that's easy enough.

There's just not that much TV I'm interested in?

Up til 3 weeks ago, because suddenly there's stuff I need and want to watch everywhere. American Gods is finally airing, based on the book by Neil Gaiman. It was my favorite book for a long time, I met Neil (we even hugged) and have my copy signed, and while the fervent love is over now, I'm still super into the concept, and the show is looking good. Plus, you know, Ian McShane is always amazing. So far it's incredibly pretty, there's good build-up of all the characters, but I'm still waiting for the emotional bang.

In the same category of based on old favorite books, there's the Handmaid's Tale, based on the book by Margaret Atwood. It's horrifying and brutal and terribly and so fucking gorgeous. I can't watch more than one episode every couple of days because every single one leaves me rattled and upset, but fuck it's so good. I especially love how the focus is very much on the relationships between the women, trapped as they all are. I wish I had the time and brain space to let it all digest more. (Although it's possible it's a good thing I'm so occupied, so the horror can't linger too much). In any case, I definitely see myself rewatching this in the future. It's also the show I'm recommending to everyone, everywhere, because it's so poignant and so current, despite being based on a book from the 80s. Guess nothing ever changes.

Last weekend, Netflix dropped the new season of Sense8. I promised myself I wouldn't binge it, because well, other stuff to do! But it was so good, definitely an upgrade from season 1 and the disappointing Christmas Special, that I couldn't help myself. So I pushed through all of it, and I'm still reeling with everything that happened. I'm sure there are tons of details that I missed, so I'll probably rewatch it at a more leisurely pace. And I'm itching to rewatch the first season, because I kind of want to look at everything with what we now know. It feels like I haven't given myself the chance yet to properly enjoy it.

The same happened with the 2nd half of the first season of The Get Down, which was dropped in April. I rushed through it, rewatched a couple of favorite scenes, but I didn't get the chance to let it all gesticulate. There was fic I wanted to write, but I need a little more time to let a canon digest to really make it mine and feel comfortable writing about it, and now because of all the other things I've watched and am watching, the ship has probably sailed.

I was thinking about this yesterday, while reading Sense8 comments on FFA lamenting the lack of fic, that this whole thing of dropping seasons in one go, makes for a whole different process of familiarizing oneself with a canon. When something airs weekly, you have time in between to think and speculate and focus on little details. By the time the end of the season is there, you're ready to write all the fic, because you've had the time to make it yours. This doesn't really happen when you binge-watch something, you loose the details of the worldbuilding.

I need those details to feel comfortable writing fic for something.

So I don't know. I'm feeling somewhat overwhelmed. Shadowhunters 2b is airing soon, which is my main fandom of the moment, so that'll probably eat up my attention, so before that I honestly want to enjoy all of this other stuff. I'm just not sure how I'm going to do that with the job, and all the fic exchanges I'm enrolled it. I've got more than 2000 posts in my tumblr drafts, because I love pretty graphics, and suffer a little bit of the 'want to catch reblog them all' syndrome.

Choices, choices, choices...

Fandom life is hard sometimes!

[community profile] smutswap  reveals are over, so I figured it was time for a wrap up post, since I actually read a lot in this exchange.

First things first, my gift of awesome!! I received a wonderful story for the Kate Daniels series, which I hadn't expected at all since I'd requested the rarest of rarepairs in Barabas/Christopher. And honestly, the gift surpassed my wildest dreams. 8k of them figuring their shit out, dealing with their feelings, kicking some magical owl ass, AND ALL THE EMOTIONAL GETTING TOGETHER SMUT.
IT IS GREAT. I love it so much, I haven't been this excited for a fic since my first Yuletide I think.

Coincidentally, I got matched to [personal profile] anticyclone for them as well, so when before this exhange they had zero fic, now there's two! I'm honestly hoping this'll seduce other people to write more for them too–the Kate Daniels fandom always need more fics in general–I'm so in love with them, I'm forever hungry for more.

It's the first time I've matched to someone who was also matched to me, and honestly I had a blast, because it was great to discuss them at length in the comments.

But what I like best is that theoretically, these two fics could coexist in canon, since their timelines more or less match up, and that makes everything all the more delicious to me.

I went to see Bob Dylan on the Neverending Tour on Monday, and it was utterly amazing.

Bob Dylan is the only musician my entire family unanimously loves -- all other music cause arguments eventually -- and therefor any car ride involving at least 3 people, Bob Dylan ends up the one being played. My parents record collection had 7 albums double, all of them Bob Dylan records from before they met. It's how they bonded. I grew up on his music, danced with my first crush on The Hurricane, learned to drive on the Missing Infidels.

Most people revolt against the music taste of their parents, and I definitely did that with my father, except for Bob. There's just something about his music, his lyrics, his narratives and the way he tells stories, that's a huge part of who I am.

So you know, with all of my older heroes dying the last two years, I promised myself I wouldn't let any opportunity slide to see any of them live. And I'm so glad I did.

It wasn't the first time I saw him perform, the Neverending Tour is neverending after all, he passes through Belgium about every two years, but this time it was even better than the last time. Obviously, I went with my parents and brothers (although one of them was sick and couldn't make it), and we all were ecstatic by the end. It's just such a peculiar experience, to listen to songs you've listened to so many times, being arranged so completely different they're often very hard to recognize, and have them be amazing in a completely different way. It's really hard to explain.

Except maybe that good music is good music. And fuck, listening to it for an hour and half was good for my soul. I made a playlist of all songs on the setlist, and I've been listening to it for days. I've been walking on clouds while singing Soon After Midnight.

It was so good.

So yeah, I'm keeping firm on my resolution, I'm going to every Bob Dylan concert in my country as long as he keeps coming. Same with the Rolling Stones, if they ever come back (so relieved I saw them last time), and of course The Boss.

There's no such thing as Forever Young, after all.

Dear Jukebox author!

Yay, it’s my favorite exchange of the year!

I’m currently on vacation for my birthday, so I’ll be prettying this letter up by the 7th. This should give you a start already though. I hope you find some info here that’s useful. I’m known to be wordy, so feel free to pick and choose to your heart’s content.

I’m a firm believer in Optional Details are Optional, so as long as you respect my few DNWs it’s going to be great!

Let us get those out of the way first:

GENERAL DNW’S

Please no references, even implied or offhand, to anything terrorism related, civilians dying, or bombs. Thank you.

  • No Underage
  • No Humiliation
  • No Infantilisation
  • No Scat

Otherwise, I’m game. The rating can be as high or low as you want and the fouler the language the better.

GENERAL LIKES

This year I’ve requested a bunch of darker tropes and prompts, and this is my blanket permission to go all out! Fucked up relationships! Violence! All the dub/con! Xeno! Blood!

The songs in itself are often quite cheerful, with darker themes under them, and that’s what I’m aiming for, okayness on the surface, fucked-upness underneath that.

As for smut, again if it’s not in the DNWs, I’m game, including for Xeno/Beastiality and anything inbetween, ABO, Dub/Con and Non/Con.

If not specified I like f/f, m/m and m/f, but with a preference for the first two. If m/f I’d like the woman to be the aggressor if that’s applicable.

All prompts are for fic, art and podfic. For art specifically I’m totally onboard for anything graphic.

I’ve made a spotify playlist of all songs I’ve requested you can listen to here.

Dear Smut Writer

I’ve written the following letter as a sort of buffet so you can pick and select whatever catches your fancy and write something we’ll both enjoy. I’m definitely fine with either straight-out PWP, but I’ve provided some narrative prompts to set the stage as it were, so you can porn those up to your hearts content. Dear Chocolatier!

I’m looking forward to your gift immensely! I love the idea behind this exchange and for me it's the kick-off for a new season of exchanges, which makes it all the more fun! I’ve written the following letter as a sort of buffet so you can pick and select whatever catches your fancy and write something we’ll both enjoy. I love both shorter fic and longfic. Specifically for this exchange, which is supposed to be low-pressure, feel free to write a snap-shot for any of my longer and plottier prompts. I'm just bad at writing short ones, I don't expect an Epic. I’m a firm believer in Optional Details are Optional, so as long as you respect my few DNWs it’s going to be great!

The new year means author reveals for Yuletide, and as always I'm having a blast finding out who wrote what for whom.

Overall Yuletide got kind of lost in the fray this year, with the new job and the general awfulness of the last part of 2016, I only wrote one fic this year. I did do my best to comment on all the things I enjoyed reading, and I made a rec list. I do hope that next year I can go back to being a Hippo, be more active in chat, and hopefully write a couple of treats.

I do have half a treat currently in limbo, so lets hope I manage to finish that for a NYR story.

I did get a lovely gift!

It combined my prompt of Jude meeting Laura and references to the home-building, and I loved the way they pulled that off. It just had the tender feeling to it that I adore about these two in private in canon, so it was a lovely surprise.

I myself matched on King Arthur, which meant that after two years of requesting the Sarmatian Threesome of my heart, I finally got to write it. Since I wrote a rarepair I didn't amass a lot of readers, but those that did seemed to enjoy it, so I'm pretty satisfied. Especially because my recip left a lovely comment and seemed to really like it.

It's always great to match on something you're really into, so that made it a really good Yuletide overall.

I've only been reading for a day, but I know myself, if I don't make one now, I'll never get to it.

So here's my quick and dirty rec list for Yuletide 2016.

10 Things I Hate About Reunions, 10 Things I Hate About You, Kat Stratford/Patrick Verona
I loved this story about Pat and Kat 10 years later, how they broke up and got together again all these years later.

Nothing Behind, Everything Ahead, Critical Role, Vex/Vax/Percy
Vex and Vax make a bet about Percy and things get out of hand. I loved the road-trippy feel of this one.

Things To Do In Denver When You're Deadpool, Deadpool (2016), Vanessa Carslyle/Wade Wilson
Amazing road-trip fic in which Vanessa and Wade love each other a lot and try to heal.

A Strange Attractor in a Stable System, Jurassic Park, Alan Grant/Ian Malcolm/Ellie Sattler
Surprisingly emotional story about Ian visiting Alan and Ellie and trying to fit himself where he already fits.

Solid Copy, The Losers, Carlos Cougar Alvarez/Jake Jensen
Great (and deliciously long) story about Jake, Cougar and a bad case of telepathy and truth serum.

Her Echoes, They Surround, The Mummy (1993), Ardeth Bay/Evy Carnahan O'Connell/Rick O'Connell
Our heroes take a well earned bath after their adventures in the desert. Hot and tender and fun, just like the movie.

Bed Of Roses, Pride (2014), Jonathan/Gethin
Great snapshots showing Jonathan and Gethin through the years. Got legit teary-eyed reading it.

Speaking For The Skin And The Bone, (Pride (2014), Sian
Got me right where the movie always hits me too, lovely character piece about one of my favorite characters.

You Might Think I'm Crazy, What's Your Number?, Ally Darling/Colin Shea
Delightful and long fic that starts right after the movie ending, wherein Ally and Colin hash out their relationship.

The following letter is still somewhat of a work in progress, for which I apologize. I’ve got all the general stuff here already, it’s just been one hell of a weekend, so I’m still working on the Trick or Treat specific stuff. So last weekend was reveals time for [community profile] jukebox_fest and it's been pretty amazing. (Jukebox is a gift exchange fest around music and music video canons. It's really awesome.)

I got a great gift, based on Human Touch by Bruce Springsteen. The fic plays with the Soulmate trope a lot, and manages to hit all the things I like to speculate about with Soulmate fic. How much do soulmate marks mess with your psyche, how much do they shape you? Can you escape that kind of predestination? It's really cool, and I love it a lot.

Woop! It's that time of the year again!

While I'm scrambling to get my [community profile] jukebox assignment up to snuff, and secretly panicking that my [community profile] unconventionalcourtship will never be finished in time, sign-ups for [community profile] pod_together ARE HAPPENING.

How excited am I? Really super excited.

Podtogether a collaborative challenge for writers and podficcers. It is one of those fandom things that I hold dearest, because it's about creating something together, but also because the sum is more than its parts. There's something magical about the works that are created for this fest, mostly I think because they're written with podcasts in mind. The coolest fanwork I ever created (co-created?) was made for Podtogether. It included a character named after my mom, five languages, 34 footnotes, and I HAD SO MUCH FUN WORKING ON IT.

I have blanket permissions on all my works, because I love podcasts, and transformative fanworks of other fanworks are my jam in general, but this is something else. It's a little bit magical.

But I'm getting sappy.

From the comm:

The Rules/FAQ for the challenge are here and sign-ups are here for individuals and here for groups. Sign-ups are open until June 4th.

We’ve been running this challenge for 5 years, and participants usually have a lot of fun and create amazing stuff. This year, we’d love to spread the word to those who might be interested but not have heard of the challenge before. Any help you can give with that mission is greatly appreciated. And if the interested party is YOU, then we look forward to seeing you there!

I'm signed up as a group already, because me and Ray had Plans to do one together since we met, AND I AM EXCITED.

I've been trying to keep my fannish spaces more or less politics and social justice free lately, because it got too draining to be always on, and always fighting, but sometimes (often really, but argh), the things happen to interconnect.

I'm sure everybody has heard about Nazi Steve Rogers by now.
I'm just so enraged, I can't properly deal with it, nor express it.
This article sums it up best: ON STEVE ROGERS #1, ANTISEMITISM, AND PUBLICITY STUNTS

I know that boycots always work best when specific, and that on the large scale of things, it won't make a difference. But still I have decided that I refuse to give Marvel any more of my money. So no more movies, nor comics (also includes X-men, because how they've been dealing with Magneto is just, YUCK)

Enough is enough. I don't have a lot of money, and I'd rather it go to companies who don't think nazism is okay and entertainment.

I don't have it in me anymore to be fannish about any of this.

I'm just done.

Dear Optimus Prime,

I’m looking forward to your gift so much! It’s my first time participating in this exchange, so I’m very excited.

I’ve written the following letter as a sort of buffet so you can pick and select whatever catches your fancy and write something we’ll both enjoy.

I’m a firm believer in Optional Details are Optional, so as long as you respect my few DNWs it’s going to be great!

I can be found on AO3 as [archiveofourown.org profile] pameluke and on tumblr as [tumblr.com profile] janoda.
