I didn't do a WIP post yesterday since I'm frantically working on my [community profile] jukebox_fest these days, and that's supposed to remain secret. The deadline is so close! Eeek! There's a lot of other stuff happening though, so I figured I'd do a shout out post.

[community profile] wipbigbang is on its second round of Claims for artists. (My story has already been claimed YAY. That means I definitely need to finish it on time o.O *insert panicky kermit*) There's still over 60 stories free for a good artist, so check out the claiming post on LJ.

Nominations for [community profile] raremaleslashex  are closing soon as well. I'm definitely doing The Get Down, Kate Daniels, Naruto (KakaGai yo!) and The Course Of Honour, but I haven't figured out my Original Work nominations yet.

Sign-ups are also happening for [community profile] treatyoselfcomm , which is a fest where you write a fic for yourself, and ancquire a cheerleader in the process. I'm really excited about it. Definitely check that out.

Also open for sign-ups is [community profile] pod_together , where you can sign up as a podficcer or an author (or both!) and create a podfic together. It's loads of fun, and one of the best-run challenges/fests I've ever seen. This year is the first time I'm not signing up as part of a group, so I'm kind of nervous about matching.

Speaking about podfic, [personal profile] hagar made a podfic out of ever the tears you wept. I'm really honored, because that's one of my personal favorite stories, and podfic is one of the best gifts you can get. It's the whole reason I have blanket permissions, I love it so much.

Anyway, it's looking like it's going to be a super busy summer, and that's not even counting the [community profile] getyourwordsout  7 days 7 Stories event that's taking place in June. I'm excited! And possibly a teensy bit worried I'm overextending myself, but fuck it, I'm going to try and kick ass!

Look, I like alliterations and there's no days starting with R, alas.

One of the reasons I'm somewhat behind on writing is that I've been reading a lot lately, on top of all the stuff I've been watching. Most of it was really good though, so I definitely don't have any regrets.

Thanks to [personal profile] isis , I started Course Of Honour a couple of weeks ago. Arranged Marriage in Space?? With slow-burn pining and lots of politics?Count me in. It finished last week, and I'm honestly sad it's over. I enjoyed it so much, both Kiem and Jainan were such great characters, with varying strengths and weakness, and I loved the world and all the politics. The slow-burn was delicious, and while I wished the author would have spent a little more time on the emotional resolution, I'm still absolutely in love with these two. And kind of hoping there'll be fanfic and/or missing scenes.

While I didn't participate in [community profile] fandom5k I did read and commented on quite a bit of fic. Overall I thought the exchange was really good quality wise. I'm definitely thinking about participating next year, if they lower the offering fandoms a little. I wrote an embarrassingly long comment (nearly hit the character limit) for i have named you queen (listen) by [personal profile] damkianna. It's a truly amazing F/F Original Work story, about a princess who gets herself out of a dire situation by proposing to another princess. It's filled with cultural conflicts and misunderstandings, is set in a super interesting desert world, with great political intrigue, and the main character has such an amazing voice, and such a layered personality. One of the best things I read so far this year. I even got out of bed after finishing it because I just had so much emotions about it, I couldn't share them by typing on my phone. It was so good.

I also really enjoyed Thorough-bass and human nature by [archiveofourown.org profile] MildredMost, which is a Pride and Prejudice story about Mary Bennet finding love and piano lessons. I never cared much for Mary, but this fic really brought home to me how much we only see her trough Lizzy's eyes, and how Mary really got the short end in her upbringing. I honestly got emotional when she got actual piano lessons and improved so marvellously, her crowning moment of awesome was so great and rewarding. I also really loved her love-interest, and truly, this is the kind of future I wish for her.

Next week the second book in the Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews comes out, so I've started my reread of Burn For Me. I'm really enjoying it, the Andrews' writing and characterisation is as ever top-notch, but I'd forgotten how much of a psychopath Mad Rogan is. Which I enjoy for plot reasons, but I'm kind of wary of him turning into a romantic lead. Basically, the Andrews' sold me on the fact that's mad so well, I'm not sure he can recover from that?
I always loved Kate and Curran's relationship from the Kate Daniels series, because they're so evenly matched, both somewhat homicidal maniacs who reach for violence as a response way too soon. They match well together because of that. Rogan and Nevada seem too fundamentally different at this point to really work as a couple, the power-imbalance seems to vast to me.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very willing to go wherever the Andrews' take me, and I have a lot of faith in their ability to truly have characters develop and grow. I'm just not sure they're getting the book space to really make it work.
In any case, I'm looking forward to the next instalment immensely.

[community profile] smutswap  reveals are over, so I figured it was time for a wrap up post, since I actually read a lot in this exchange.

First things first, my gift of awesome!! I received a wonderful story for the Kate Daniels series, which I hadn't expected at all since I'd requested the rarest of rarepairs in Barabas/Christopher. And honestly, the gift surpassed my wildest dreams. 8k of them figuring their shit out, dealing with their feelings, kicking some magical owl ass, AND ALL THE EMOTIONAL GETTING TOGETHER SMUT.
IT IS GREAT. I love it so much, I haven't been this excited for a fic since my first Yuletide I think.

Something Fierce (8295 words) by anticyclone

Summary:
"Barabas, if you go any slower, you'll be going backwards." They've been circling each other for a while. Something's got to give.

Coincidentally, I got matched to [personal profile] anticyclone for them as well, so when before this exhange they had zero fic, now there's two! I'm honestly hoping this'll seduce other people to write more for them too–the Kate Daniels fandom always need more fics in general–I'm so in love with them, I'm forever hungry for more.

It's the first time I've matched to someone who was also matched to me, and honestly I had a blast, because it was great to discuss them at length in the comments.

But what I like best is that theoretically, these two fics could coexist in canon, since their timelines more or less match up, and that makes everything all the more delicious to me.

I also enjoyed a lot of other works in the collection, most of them original work. Rec list below the cut, heed the tags and warnings though, because a lot of it is non/dubcon. And all of it is explicit.

I've only been reading for a day, but I know myself, if I don't make one now, I'll never get to it.

So here's my quick and dirty rec list for Yuletide 2016.

10 Things I Hate About Reunions, 10 Things I Hate About You, Kat Stratford/Patrick Verona
I loved this story about Pat and Kat 10 years later, how they broke up and got together again all these years later.

Nothing Behind, Everything Ahead, Critical Role, Vex/Vax/Percy
Vex and Vax make a bet about Percy and things get out of hand. I loved the road-trippy feel of this one.

Things To Do In Denver When You're Deadpool, Deadpool (2016), Vanessa Carslyle/Wade Wilson
Amazing road-trip fic in which Vanessa and Wade love each other a lot and try to heal.

A Strange Attractor in a Stable System, Jurassic Park, Alan Grant/Ian Malcolm/Ellie Sattler
Surprisingly emotional story about Ian visiting Alan and Ellie and trying to fit himself where he already fits.

Solid Copy, The Losers, Carlos Cougar Alvarez/Jake Jensen
Great (and deliciously long) story about Jake, Cougar and a bad case of telepathy and truth serum.

Her Echoes, They Surround, The Mummy (1993), Ardeth Bay/Evy Carnahan O'Connell/Rick O'Connell
Our heroes take a well earned bath after their adventures in the desert. Hot and tender and fun, just like the movie.

Bed Of Roses, Pride (2014), Jonathan/Gethin
Great snapshots showing Jonathan and Gethin through the years. Got legit teary-eyed reading it.

Speaking For The Skin And The Bone, (Pride (2014), Sian
Got me right where the movie always hits me too, lovely character piece about one of my favorite characters.

You Might Think I'm Crazy, What's Your Number?, Ally Darling/Colin Shea
Delightful and long fic that starts right after the movie ending, wherein Ally and Colin hash out their relationship.

So last weekend was reveals time for [community profile] jukebox_fest and it's been pretty amazing. (Jukebox is a gift exchange fest around music and music video canons. It's really awesome.)

I got a great gift, based on Human Touch by Bruce Springsteen. The fic plays with the Soulmate trope a lot, and manages to hit all the things I like to speculate about with Soulmate fic. How much do soulmate marks mess with your psyche, how much do they shape you? Can you escape that kind of predestination? It's really cool, and I love it a lot.

Summary:

She's waited forty years to hear the right words. But what if she doesn't need them to find a happy life?

I've been reading a lot of the fic the past couple of days, and there's some really great stuff in the collection. I love how in most cases canon knowledge isn't really required - even though it's a small exchange, I don't think I've ever read so much fic in a collection, except maybe for Yuletide. Some general observations, there's a lot of fic about women, which I enjoy, and a lot of it is kind of creepy, which I didn't know I enjoyed this much.

I participated in Smut Swap and had a blast.
The writing part of it was kind of challenging, I hadn't written actual smut in years. But I ended up really happy with my fic, and I received a great comment (possibly the best I ever got) from my recip. So that was awesome.

I got a lovely fic, featuring Poe Dameron/Finn/Rey and Soul Bonds, which is one of my favorite tropes ever.

Burning Twice Through (1293 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Wars - All Media Types, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Poe Dameron/Finn/Rey
Characters: Poe Dameron, Finn (Star Wars), Rey (Star Wars)
Additional Tags: Soul Bond
Summary:

Too many things are happening to let Finn understand why they both make him burn, until finally they get time to fix it.

Note: I loved the blend between emotions and feelings (Finn is somewhat overwhelmed) and smuttiness.
