Last week's winners were not what I expected! But F goes to The Red Tent and K goes to The Magicians (which is WAY more hated than I had realized! For good reason apparently.)

How FMK works, short version: I am trying to clear out my unreads. So there is a poll, in which you get to pick F, M, or K. F means I should spend a night of wild passion with the book ASAP, and then decide whether to keep it or not. M means I should continue to commit to a long-term relationship of sharing my bedroom with it. K means it should go away immediately. Anyone can vote, you don't have to actually know anything about the books.

I pick a winner on Friday night (although won't actually close the poll, people can still vote,) and report results/ post the new poll on the following Tuesday, and write a response to the F winner sometime in the next week.

Link to long version of explanation (on first poll)

This week's theme: I have no idea what this book is about, I'm pretty sure I only have it for the title.

Poll: Bail, Capote, Carey, Collins, Connors, Corliss, Ericson, Galloway, Gould, Morse, Shann, Shreve, Townsend, Wodehouse )

I haven't read everything in Crossovering and Femslashex, but I think I've read everything in fandoms I know and the original works with tropes that appeal to me.

In Crossovering, I want to mention that [personal profile] sovay said that my gift fic Frank & the Phoenix is perfectly readable without knowing David Blaize (it's a crossover with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Frank Maddox/Newt Scamander) and actually, I think that as long as you are familiar with the Harry Potter-verse, it should be fine. Other Crossovering stories I particularly liked:

And Bide the Danger (6764 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling, Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Amelia Bones/Susan Pevensie, Amelia Bones & Edgar Bones, Aslan & Susan Pevensie, Amelia Bones & Alastor Moody, Edgar Bones/Original Female Character(s)
Additional Tags: Crossovers & Fandom Fusions, The Problem of Susan, Temporal Paradox, Department of Mysteries, Dark Character, Deus Ex Machina, Investigations
Summary: Susan Pevensie: former Unspeakable, legendary beauty, possible Dark witch. A young Amelia Bones, eager to make her mark on MLE, has just been assigned to track her down. But the further Amelia proceeds with her investigation, the more questions she uncovers - especially once she meets Susan herself.

The Start of a Long Summer (1676 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Azula (Avatar), Tumnus
Additional Tags: Crossover, Attempted Kidnapping
Summary: Azula steps through a wardrobe to find a kidnapping faun and a wintry kingdom ripe for regime change.

There are also two lovely artworks for due South/Lost, and although I'm not familiar with Lost I certainly can recognize the dS characters in Bob Pays a Visit to the Travelers and Kenzi Meets Diefenbaker.

In the Femslashex collection, I particularly liked these:

The Part of Her Hair (10596 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Mary Bennet/Original Female Character
Characters: Mary Bennet, Original Female Character, Lydia Bennet, Kitty Bennet
Additional Tags: Falling In Love, Family Bonding
Summary: Miss Gibson said, “In the spirit of truthful admission, Miss Bennet, I intend to spend some time devising the right question for you. If I may see you again?”

Why did that sound strange? But she always sounded strange to people herself. And it was a familiar kind of strangeness, as if it were something she had heard before, only not like this.

Mary, constrained by the principles of truth, could only admit that she would enjoy that very much.

A Golden Thread Between Hearts (1633 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Seasons of Glass and Iron - Amal El-Mohtar
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tabitha/Amira
Characters: Tabitha (Seasons of Glass and Iron), Amira (Seasons of Glass and Iron)
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, First Kiss
Summary: Tabitha and Amira travel, and grow, and love.

(The canon for the second is a freely-available short story I recced before: Seasons of Glass and Iron by Amal El-Mohtar, which is f/f fairytale fantasy with an edge of grimdark.)

There are actually many other excellent stories in both collections, and I encourage you to browse!

Hello, sweet swappers! As promised, SWAPS ARE HERE. SWAPS ARE SWAPPENING.

If you are new to swaps, or to Yuletide, and curious about what the heck I'm talking about, our brand-new 2017 FAQ is here! If you are old to swaps, read on!

2017 SCHEDULE! REMINDERS! SIGN-UPS! )

Questions? Comments? First check out the FAQ, and then, if that doesn’t sort you, feel free to comment either here or there, or email us at yuleswaps at gmail!

Hello, beloved swappers! Don’t worry, swaps IS happening, as always! Sign-ups post will go up, ummmm, soon. I meant to kick us off around the beginning of the month, but #life #got overwhelmed by the idea of needing to rewrite this FAQ, tbh. Sorry!

This year! We have moved to Dreamwidth, because Yuletide has moved to Dreamwidth, and because it seems like most of our constituency has done the same. We will probably continue to crosspost to the Yuletide LJ community in some capacity, linking back to DW posts and providing a forum for LJ-only swappers to continue to ask questions and make contact when their yahoo emails inevitably fail. ;)

Tags will remain the same: “omnomnom” for candyswap, “who likes books” for bookswap, and “nice cuppa” for drinkswap (er, just as soon as I'm able to request their creation on DW). As on LJ, we strongly encourage swappers to track tags for the swaps they are interested in.

(Go to your DW Account Settings >> Notifications afterward, to make sure all the tags you wanted definitely took!)

And now…onward!

FAQ! )

But seriously, when are sign-ups going to be open for Yuleswaps 2017?

Soon, I swear. Tonight, I hope, but realistically, might be more like tomorrow or Tuesday. I will get it together. I promise. Swaps will happen.

Happy swapping, swappers!!!!

The assignment submission deadline is now in just over a week, on the 22nd of October at 11:55pm UTC. (Countdown | What time is that for me?)

If you will need to default, please do so before this deadline. No-show defaulters must complete a gift by next round for one participant if they want to participate again.

We still have two pinch hits! These are due on the 28nd of October at 11:55pm UTC. If you can take either of these, please comment on this post with your AO3 name and the pinch hit you wish to claim.

Pinch Hit #15 - Hidden Legacy Series - Ilona Andrews, Innkeeper Chronicles - Ilona Andrews, The Penumbra Podcast )

On Friday, two of the exchanges I'm participating in - Crossovering and Femslashex - went live! I got two lovely stories, one for each, though I was only able to read one before heading out of town sans laptop for a nonprofit retreat. But now I'm home with a real keyboard and can point to my delightful gifts.

Frank & the Phoenix (6874 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: David Blaize - E. F. Benson, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Frank Maddox/Newt Scamander
Characters: Frank Maddox, Newt Scamander
Additional Tags: Greek Mythology - Freeform, Crossover Pairings
Summary: Frank stumbles across a dangerous--and impossible--beast during one of his trips to Greece.

This story is everything I never knew I wanted from this crossover! The author does an amazing job of fitting the two canons together in a logical way, and pulling in all sorts of delicious details from both to build the story. It's from Frank's POV, which I loved because I'm a real sucker for the wizarding world seen through a muggle's eyes.

Illustrious the Return (1562 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Alpennia Series - Heather Rose Jones
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Barbara Lumbiert/Margerit Sovitre
Summary: Their second arrival to Saveze was very different from their first. Instead of arriving riding double on a horse, fleeing with no more than they could carry; now they arrived in a carriage emblazoned with the Saveze crest with servants and carts loaded with trunks full of books and clothes.

The very first Alpennia story on AO3, and it was written for me, hooray! It really feels in tune with their canonical relationship, with great characterization. It's also very grounded in the wonderful details of canon, the mysteries that connect the land and its people.

I also wrote one fic for each of these fests, which I'm sure you can identify as my work FROM SPAAAACE. But I need to go read more in both of them!

Just so you know -

We have one work in the collection that didn't reveal with the rest. We just tried unrevealing the collection and re-revealing it, so AO3 might send you a second email. Just ignore it!

We're working on solving this issue!

Stories and artworks are now visible here. You should receive an email from AO3 with a link to your gift soon, but you can also find it here: http://archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR-USER-NAME-HERE/gifts

Author/artist reveals will happen in exactly ONE WEEK, on October 20 at 12 p.m
. PDT. (What time is that where I live?) We will leave the archive open for submissions so if there are additional treats (of any size), that you would like to post, you may do so during this period.

Please note that works posted for exchanges tend to get buried when archives go live, as a result of earlier posting dates. We advise that you change your publication date so your work doesn't get lost in the fray. To do so, simply click Edit on your post and scroll down to the Associations heading. Check the box next to 'Set a different publication date' and change it to today's date.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns or the gift you have received goes against the challenge rules, please email us at crossoveringmods@gmail.com and we will handle it as soon as we can.

Thank you everyone for participating and thank you all for your patience!
We've had more stumbles than we're used to this year, as the whole mod team has had some life events happen that take priority, so we truly appreciate everyone sticking by us!

I'm posting this since the usual people haven't! This is copy-pasted from the excellent posts last year and the year before (2016, 2015). Any new errors are mine.

[dreamwidth.org profile] raininshadows has also made a spreadsheet of requests!

Are you interested in text adventures, CYOA, twine games or other sorts of interactive fiction? Do you want to let your writer know you'd be happy to receive something along those lines? Are you looking for someone to write IF for? This post is for you.

It's officially past midnight in my time zone, so that means all assigned works should be posted and complete! We will be checking works starting now and in the morning and if we find any that are not up to the challenge guidelines, we will be sending out emergency pinch hits. (Boy, we hope not though.)

As long as everything looks a-okay, works will be officially revealed on October 13 at 12 p.m. PDT (
Want to know when that is where you are? Or count down to it here!) If you still have treats to post, you may post them until that time.

ONE HOUR LEFT!

There is only ONE HOUR LEFT before all late pinch hits must be complete and posted at AO3. The final deadline is 11:59 p.m. PDT on October 12. (Find out when that is where you live or count down to it here.)

At that time, we will run a check (to the best of our ability) that all works abide by the challenge rules.

Our current plan is to reveal works on October 13 at 12 p.m. PDT, but in order to that everyone who finished an assignment must have a gift. (If that doesn't come to pass, we will keep you aware as we adjust the reveal time accordingly. (

There are slightly less than 24 hours left for anyone assigned a late pinch hit to get their works posted! This means every person who created a gift should have a gift in the archive at the time. All works must be posted and complete no later than 11:59 p.m. PDT on October 12. (Find out when that is where you live or count down to it here.) We will check, to the best of our ability, to make sure all works follow the rules of the challenge, so while people may edit their posts at any time, your works MUST be considered complete.

Our current plan is to reveal works on October 13 at 12 p.m. PDT, as long as everyone who posted a story or artwork has a gift. (If that doesn't come to pass, we will keep you aware as we adjust accordingly. (Want to know when that is where you are? Or count down to it here!)

What I've recently finished reading:

All Systems Red, book 1 of The Murderbot Diaries, and thoroughly delightful due to Murderbot's entertaining narrative voice. And why are fictional AIs all into soap operas these days? There are several more books in the series lined up, none of which are published yet, but lots of people requested it in Yuletide, so maybe there will soon be more fic to add to the one [personal profile] cathexys pointed me to in my previous books post.

What I'm currently reading:

I started reading Fly by Night by Frances Hardinge, but it's oddly hard going considering it's middle-grade. Not that I don't like it, just that it's kind of densely written. So when a book I had on hold came in at the library, I temporarily abandoned it and started reading...

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo, the sequel to Six of Crows. There were a few awkward bits early on, but I'm getting into it. (I'm also sort of shipping Inej/Nina, which...I don't think I'm supposed to do. Definitely shipping Jesper/Wylan.)

Still listening to Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. I kind of want it as a graphic novel or anime, tbh.

What I'm reading next:

Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan, the third Magus Chase book I HOPE.

There are just about 48 hours left for anyone assigned a late pinch hit to get their works posted! This also means any one with already posted works has the same amount of time to make adjustments or edits to their works. We will be closing the archive promptly at 11:59 p.m. PDT on October 12. (Find out when that is where you live or count down to it here.)

Our current plans is to reveal works on October 13 at 12 p.m. PDT, as long as everyone who posted a story or artwork has a gift. (If that doesn't come to pass, we will keep you aware as we adjust accordingly. (Want to know when that is where you are? Or count down to it here!)
